'spiderman' cake

I was informed by my boys on Sunday that we were going to be "making a Spiderman cake today"....... reallly??!!

So we did .... and here is how we did in in case you want to try. It was the best recipe I've ever used soo moist, sweet and sugary with a beautiful flavour.
It is taken from the "Chocolate Box" book, which has the scrummiest recipes in.  I liked this one because it used real chocolate instead of cocoa (which I refuse to pay over £2 a tub for!).
It does tell you the recipe for chocolate butter icing but we just used normal icing sugar and coloured it.

What do you need?

22g of soft butter
55g of plain chocolate (we used Milk as didn't have any plain)
1 tbsp strong black coffee (we didn't include this)
1 tsp baking powder
225g caster sugar (we used granulated as was all we had)
4 eggs, beaten
50g ground almonds (we didn't add these)
2 tbsp milk
1 tbsp vanilla essence (we didn't use this but added some red food colouring ,,,,, which turned orange - grrr).

What do you do?

1) Preheat the oven to 180*c/ 350*F/ Gas Mark 4.   Grease a mould (it suggests 1.7L/ 3pt).
2) Melt the chocolate and coffee together and leave to cool.
3) Sift the flour and baking powder into a bowl
4) Add the butter, sugar, eggs, ground almonds and milk.  beat well until smooth.
5) Transfer half the mixture to another bowl and stir in the vanilla essence (or food colouring).
6) Stir the cooled chocolate into the other half of the mixture.
7) Place alternate layers of mixture into the mould and use a skewer to create a swirly effect.
8) Smooth the top

Don't forget to let the kids lick the spoons :)

9) Place in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes until risen, a skewer will come out clean when it is cooked.
10) Leave in the mould for 5 minutes to cool then turn out onto a wire rack.

We then made up some icing sugar with red food colouring in and spread it over the cake, sprinkles with red and blue sprinkles.

YUM..... might just go get a slice to help me write some more posts :)   If you try it let me know how you get on...
